Researchers meet journalists

An unusual workshop took place in Accra 13-17 February. The workshop on African researcher leaders and media to promote and improve agriculture brought together senior scientists and media professionals from all over Africa to seek ways to work together for the benefit of both groups, and in so doing, for the benefit of all Africans. The workshop was supported by both FARA and CTA and facilitated by Wren Media.

Topics explored included: Whose responsibility is it to ensure messages are correct, the scientist or the journalist? What causes communication to break down? What and how do we use different communication tools? These and other topics were discussed with considerable animation. The group participated on a field tour to Ada district to experience a community radio station’s outreach programme first hand. The workshop culminated with a press conference announcing the new partnership between research and the media for agricultural science and innovation.
