The 6th Africa Agriculture Science Week (AASW), hosted by the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), in collaboration with the Government of Ghana, closed (20th July) amid fanfare and celebrations.
This was the most well attended AASW ever, with 1,334 participants attending including Ministers, Parliamentarians, Scientific Researchers, Farmers, extension practitioners, and civil society partners with strong presence of the CGIAR and development partners.
Through side-events, exhibitions and plenary sessions the Week focused on the theme of “Africa Feeding Africa through Agricultural Science and Innovation” and examined the sub-themes of education and human resource development, innovations to improve productivity and resilience, moving from competition to collaboration and innovative financing and investment in agriculture.
The climax of the event was the celebrated ‘Change of Guards’ handing over ceremony during the Business meeting wherein Dr. Tiemoko Yo (erstwhile Chairman of FARA) handed over the reins to Dr. Charity Kruger who becomes the 2nd female Chairperson of the Board of FARA. Prof. Monty Jones also handed over the reins of power after eleven years as Executive Director to his successor. In his inaugural statement, the new Executive Director of FARA, Dr. Yemi Akinbamijo stated that:
“With a new Board and Executive Director, FARA as a Forum has the opportunity to start on a new slate…by working together, pooling together and delivering together”
Dr. Akinbamijo comes into the leadership of the apex body for ARD in Africa with 30 years’ experience in animal health, market oriented production systems, agricultural research, food security and rural development. Having headed the Agriculture and Food Security Division of the African Union Commission prior to his appointment, he also seats on the board of several international panels such as International Trypanotolerance Center; Continental Working Group on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Issues; Africa-EU Joint Expert Group; Africa-Brazil on Agriculture and Food Security; Africa-Arab Joint Action on Food Security and Agriculture; Steering Committee on African Growth and Development and a host of others. He holds a PhD in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences with specialization on Tropical Animal production from Wageningen Agriculture University, The Netherlands.
