ABOUT THE AFRICA AGRICULTURE SCIENCE WEEK

Every three years, the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) convenes a continental gathering of all stakeholders involved in Africa agricultural development. This gathering has become known as the Africa Agriculture Science Week (AASW). The Government of Ghana has graciously accepted to host the sixth (6th) AASW and the General Assembly of the FARA. 
The AASW will bring together representatives of FARA's constituents including African and non-African institutions involved in African agricultural research and development such as the Sub-Regional Organizations (SROs) (ASARECA, CORAF/WECARD, CCARDESA and NASRO), Farmers' and Pastoralists' Organizations, the Agricultural Research Institutions, Agricultural Educational Institutions including universities. Others are Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working in agriculture, policy makers  and private enterprises that comprise the national agricultural research systems (NARS), non-African advanced research institutions (ARIs), the International Agricultural Research Centers (IARCs), international NGOs, policy makers, private sector, Ministries of Agriculture, Education, Science and Technology, national and regional parliamentary sub-committees on agriculture and Africa’s development partners. 

OBJECTIVES

  • To enable FARA constituents meet to review progress and lessons learnt since the 5th Agriculture Science Week ;
  • To determine the African regional agenda for the next three years; 
  • To hold the Ghana Agricultural Science day as a highlight of Africa Agriculture Science Week 
  • To mark  progress towards achievement of the CAADP vision; and    
  • To hold the Business meeting for the purpose of ratifying various issues related to the program, governance of FARA and the leadership of the FARA and Secretariat.

 
EXPECTED OUTCOMES

  • Increased knowledge of the problems, opportunities and successes in African agricultural research and development
  • Greater awareness of the roles and contributions of different stakeholders and enhanced networking and interaction 
  • Greater appreciation amongst the participants and the public of the important contributions of agricultural research for development in Africa, especially in Ghana 
  • Greater awareness of CAADP and mobilizing government support for CAADP     country process and budgetary allocation to agriculture 
  • FARA’s program for the next three years reviewed and endorsed
  • Approval of the appointment  of new and continuing members of the FARA Board of Directors 
  • Election of the FARA Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson nominated by the Board
  • Ratification of the appointment  of the new Executive Director of FARA
